There is a particular quiet in the workshop that has nothing to do with silence. The presses are loud when they run, a steady clatter of metal on paper that fills the room like weather. But between print runs, in the hours spent setting type by hand, the quiet is total.

Each letter is chosen, weighed, placed. There is no undo, no autocorrect, no second draft hiding behind a screen. The printer works the way the craft has always worked: forwards, with consequences.

For the last three decades, this has been the daily practice of one of the few remaining letterpress operators in the city. The trade has nearly disappeared, replaced by faster, cheaper, infinitely correctable digital printing. But something about the physical permanence of metal type, the slight impression it leaves in good paper, the way ink sits differently than toner, keeps a small but devoted clientele coming back.

The workshop itself looks like a museum that still works for a living. Cabinets of wooden and metal type line the walls, sorted by size and face, decades of accumulated typefaces that simply cannot be bought new anymore. A Vandercook proof press dominates the centre of the room, its iron frame worn smooth where hands have rested on it for fifty years.

What keeps the work alive is not nostalgia alone. Designers increasingly seek out the texture and intentionality that letterpress provides, the opposite of the disposable, infinitely editable digital object.

A wedding invitation, a small book of poems, a limited run of gallery prints: these are the jobs that sustain the practice, each one a small act of resistance against the assumption that faster is always better.
